Do you need a VPS to run an MT5 EA?

An Expert Advisor only trades while its terminal is running. Here is what stops when it is not, what a VPS really involves, and when it makes more sense to have someone host it for you.

If the EA has to trade while your computer is off, yes — it has to run somewhere that never switches off. That is either a VPS you rent and look after yourself, or a hosting service that runs the terminal for you. Your own PC works only for as long as the PC, the power and the internet never stop.

An Expert Advisor is not a service in the cloud. It is a program that lives inside one MetaTrader 5 terminal on one computer, and it only does anything while that terminal is open and connected. Close the terminal and the EA stops thinking.

What actually stops when the terminal goes off

Less than people fear, and more than they think:

So the question is not only “will it trade?” but “who notices when it stops?”

Your three options

1. Your own computer

Free, and fine for testing. The problems are all ordinary ones: the computer goes to sleep, Windows restarts for an update, the laptop lid closes, the internet drops, the power cuts out. Each of them stops the EA, and none of them tells you. It is also usually far from your broker's trade server, which adds delay to every order.

2. A VPS

A VPS is a Windows computer in a data centre that you rent and log in to remotely. It stays on around the clock, and if you pick one in the same region as your broker's server, your orders reach the broker faster. Expect to pay roughly USD 10 to 40 a month, depending on the provider and how many terminals you run.

What you are really renting is a machine, not a service. You install MetaTrader, log in, attach the EA, and from then on it is yours to look after:

MetaTrader also has its own built-in virtual hosting, which copies the EA from your terminal to a MetaQuotes server for a monthly fee. It is the simplest kind of VPS, with limits: you cannot log in to the machine, and EAs that need external files or DLLs do not run there.

3. A hosting service

Here someone else runs the terminal, on their server, logged in to your account at your broker. You install nothing and maintain nothing. Your part is the trading login, so they can connect the terminal.

Handing over a login sounds bigger than it is, as long as you know what it can and cannot do:

Red flags in any hosting offer

Which one fits

Testing an EA, or watching it every day anyway? Your own computer is enough.

Have your own EA as a file, and comfortable looking after Windows? A VPS near your broker's server is the cheapest way to keep it running 24/5.

Want it to just run, or using an EA that is only available hosted? A hosting service, as long as none of the red flags above apply.

Our own option. Our gold EA is available hosted only: it runs on our server, connected to your own MT5 account, with setup and monitoring included. Your money stays with your broker, and there is no profit share. Live results and details: Gold EA + Hosting.
