MT5 indicator not showing on the chart

You copied the file in, and nothing happened. Here is every cause worth checking, ordered by how often it is the one — starting with the folder almost everybody gets wrong.

Last updated 2026-10-08

Nine times out of ten the indicator is not missing — it is installed in the wrong folder, or installed in the right folder of the wrong MetaTrader. MetaTrader 5 does not read the folder you see in Program Files. It reads a separate data folder, and that is the one that matters.

Below are every cause worth checking, in the order they actually occur, with the fix for each. Work down the list and stop when it appears.

1. You put the file in the folder you can see, not the one MT5 reads

This is the big one. MetaTrader 5 installs its program files in one place and keeps your indicators, experts and scripts somewhere else entirely — a per-user data folder with a long random name. Copy an indicator into the Program Files folder and MT5 will never look at it.

Never navigate to it by hand. Let the terminal show you:

File → Open Data Folder → MQL5 → Indicators

Drop the .ex5 there. That is the only correct location, and this method is correct on every machine, every Windows version, and every MT5 build.

If you run more than one MetaTrader

Each installation has its own data folder. Two brokers means two folders that look identical inside. Open Data Folder from the terminal you are actually looking at, not from whichever one happened to be open.

2. You did not refresh the Navigator

MT5 reads the Indicators folder when it starts and does not watch it afterwards. A file added while the terminal is running will not appear on its own.

Right-click anywhere in the Navigator panel and choose Refresh. If it still is not listed, restart the terminal.

3. It is an MT4 file

MetaTrader 4 indicators are .ex4. MetaTrader 5 indicators are .ex5. They are different formats for different platforms and they are not interchangeable — an .ex4 in the MT5 Indicators folder will simply never appear.

There is no converter. The indicator has to be compiled for MT5 from MQL5 source.

Worth knowing if you bought from a download site: a lot of what is sold as “MT5 version” is the MT4 file renamed. If the extension is .ex4, it is not an MT5 indicator no matter what the listing said.

4. It is in the Experts folder instead

Indicators go in MQL5/Indicators. Expert advisors go in MQL5/Experts. Put an indicator in Experts and it shows up under Expert Advisors in the Navigator, where you were not looking — or refuses to attach properly when you drag it on.

Some vendors ship a folder containing both. Read the file names before copying anything, and put each part where it belongs.

5. It loaded, and then errored

An indicator that fails during initialisation is removed from the chart immediately. It looks exactly like nothing happened.

Check the terminal’s own log. The Toolbox panel at the bottom has an Experts tab and a Journal tab. Errors appear there with the indicator name and a line number.

Common entries and what they mean:

6. The chart does not have enough history

An indicator that needs 200 bars of lookback cannot draw anything on a chart holding 150 bars. It will either print nothing or throw an array error.

Scroll left to force MT5 to download history, or press Home to jump to the start of the chart. Then check Tools → Options → Charts and set Max bars in chart to Unlimited.

On a fresh terminal this is very common. MT5 downloads price history on demand, so a symbol you have never opened starts with almost nothing.

7. It needs DLL imports and they are switched off

Indicators that call external libraries need permission. Without it they stop at initialisation.

Tools → Options → Expert Advisors → tick Allow DLL imports. Or set it per-indicator in the Common tab of its properties dialog.

Be deliberate about this one. A DLL runs native code on your machine with your permissions, outside anything MetaTrader can sandbox. Granting it to an indicator from a download site is not a small decision — it is a trading terminal with your account credentials in it.

8. It is drawing, but not where you are looking

The indicator is attached and running and you still see nothing. Either it is drawing in a separate window below the chart that is collapsed to nothing, or its values are far off the visible price scale.

Check the Indicators list first: right-click the chart → Indicators List. If it is in there, it is running. Drag the divider between the chart and the sub-window upward, or double-click the chart and press the up arrow to cycle sub-windows.

9. The colours are set to None

Every drawing buffer in an MT5 indicator has a colour, and a buffer set to None draws nothing at all while reporting no error.

Right-click the chart → Indicators List → select it → Properties → Colors tab. Anything showing None gets a real colour. This happens most often after loading someone else’s template.

10. It only runs on certain symbols or timeframes

Plenty of indicators are written to do nothing outside the conditions they were built for — a gold-only tool on EURUSD, or an M5 tool on H4. Some say so in the log. Many just sit there silently.

Check the documentation, then test it on the symbol and timeframe the author intended before concluding it is broken.

A note on where it came from

If you are troubleshooting a file from a download site, a “group buy” or a Telegram channel, add one more possibility to the list: it may not be the product at all. Renamed files, MT4 builds sold as MT5, demo-limited versions and outright different indicators are all common.

Nothing on this page will fix that, and nobody supports it. An indicator that runs trading decisions on your terminal is not the place to save twenty dollars.

Still nothing?

Work the list in order rather than jumping around — it is sorted by how often each cause actually turns out to be the one. If you reach the end with the file confirmed in the right folder, the Navigator refreshed, and nothing in the Journal, the file itself is almost certainly not a valid MT5 indicator.
